What are my options for lenses?
There are many eyeglass lens options available. Dr. Meyer will take your lifestyle and vision correction needs into consideration when helping you select the right lenses for your eyes.
- Polycarbonate lenses – are significantly lighter and thinner than standard plastic lenses. Impact resistance is incorporated into their design, making them a safer and more durable choice. The material naturally blocks nearly 100% of harmful UVA and UVB rays without the need for an additional coating, protecting the long-term health of your eyes.
- High-index lenses – are a type of plastic lens that bends light more efficiently, leading to a thinner, lighter, and more visually appealing lens. Less material is used to achieve the same vision correction, making them a good choice for individuals with strong prescriptions that would otherwise require a thicker lens. Their design leads to significantly more light reflection than standard plastic or polycarbonate materials, which is why adding an anti-reflective coating is often recommended.
- Crizal® anti-reflective coatings by Essilor – are recognized as the gold standard for clarity, durability, and lens protection. They reduce glare from all angles, resist scratches and smudges, and provide built-in UV protection for clearer vision and longer-lasting lenses. Unlike basic “no glare” coatings often found on internet or mass-market eyewear, Crizal coatings are engineered with advanced, multi-layer technology designed for superior performance and longevity. This precision design enhances comfort while driving at night and using digital devices by minimizing reflections, while Essilor’s high-resistance technology ensures exceptional durability for everyday wear.
- TD2 scratch-resistant coating – developed by Essilor that protects lenses from daily wear, providing a significantly harder surface than standard plastic or polycarbonate scratch coatings. The name stands for Tough, Durable, and 2-Sided, meaning it is applied to both the front and back of the lens. This is critical because approximately 40% of lens scratches occur on the backside.
- Transitions lenses – automatically adjust from clear to a dark, sunglass-like tint when exposed to UV light. They offer convenience by combining prescription glasses and sunglasses into one pair, while providing continuous protection from harmful UVA and UVB rays, as well as filtering blue-violet light.
- Blue Light Filtering Lenses – Essilor Essential Blue™ lenses are designed to selectively reduce exposure to harmful blue-violet light while maintaining clear, natural vision. Using integrated lens material technology, these lenses help filter a portion of high-energy visible (HEV) light emitted from digital screens, LED lighting, and sunlight. The result is improved visual comfort during prolonged screen use, without noticeable color distortion or added lens tint—providing everyday blue-light protection in a clear, high-quality lens.
- Essilor Eyezen® Lenses – Essilor Eyezen® lenses are designed to support visual comfort in today’s digital world by reducing eye strain associated with prolonged screen use. With enhanced focusing support and optional blue-light filtering, Eyezen® lenses help relax the eyes, improve visual clarity at near, and provide comfortable, natural vision throughout the day.
